Important topics of mental health and wellbeing, self-worth and identity, advocacy and social justice will be covered by special guests on a speaking tour being held in Port Lincoln this month. The City of Port Lincoln is proud to collaborate with the Australia Day Council of South Australia to bring four inspirational Australians to meet with local school students, families, and community members on their “Tour of Honour” around regional SA.
The speakers include:
• SA Senior Australian of the Year 2022 – educator, counsellor, and author Mark Le Messurier;
• SA Young Australian of the Year 2022 – special needs dentistry consultant Dr Trudy Lin;
• SA Local Hero of the Year 2022 – lymphoedema advocate and leader Monique Bareham; and
• SA motivational speaker and body positivity advocate Taryn Brumfitt.
The City of Port Lincoln invites the community to engage with the speakers in the Nautilus Theatre on Wednesday, November 16 from 4pm.
There will be a special screening of the new body positivity documentary, Embrace Kids, and a Q&A session with its creator Taryn Brumfitt, and Mark Le Messurier who specialises in teaching and counselling of children and young people. They will be joined by the fellow award winners, Australia Day Council of SA Chief Executive Officer Jan Chorley, City of Port Lincoln Mayor Brad Flaherty and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Morgan, and MC Emma Pedler.
Both the free screening of Embrace Kids and the Q&A will explore mental health and wellbeing, body-image and acceptance, social media and inclusion – issues that matter for our young people and all members of the community. The community is warmly invited to attend both parts of the event – admission is free. Registration is essential via Eventbrite www.eventbrite.com.au
City of Port Lincoln Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Morgan encourages Port Lincoln community members to attend, as this is a rare opportunity to engage with some of the State’s most inspiring people of the time.
PLHS will host the Tour of Honour at our school on Wednesday November 16th, with our Year 9, 10 and 11 SRC representatives attending the sessions. The “Embrace Kids” documentary will also be made available for our students to view.
The Australian of the Year Tour of Honour has been made possible by the support of presenting partners including Department of Premier and Cabinet, MGA Insurance Group, Marshall & Brougham Constructions Pty Ltd, Terry White Chemmart, Essity Medical Solutions, Traveling and Touring partners Des’s Minibus, and Media partner ABC North and West SA.
