Recommended Background: Successful completion of Year 8 Science

Content:

Over Years 7 to 10, students develop their understanding of microscopic and atomic structures, how systems at a range of scales are shaped by flows of energy and matter and interactions due to forces, and develop the ability to quantify changes and relative amounts

The Australian Curriculum: Science is organised around six key ideas and three interrelated strands. The six key ideas are:

  • patterns, order and organisation
  • form and function
  • stability and change
  • scale and measurement
  • matter and energy
  • systems

The three curriculum strands are:

  • science understanding
  • science as a human endeavour
  • science inquiry skills

Topics covered in Year 9 include:

  • Unit 1: Responding to change
  • Unit 2: Interdependence and ecosystems
  • Unit 3: Plate tectonics
  • Unit 4: Atoms
  • Unit 5: Changes in Matter
  • Unit 6: Energy transfer
  • Unit 7: Energy waves
  • Unit 8: Science storytelling

Leads to: Year 10 Science

Assessment:

Student performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
