The study of Technology and Food supports students to develop the capacity to make decisions, solve problems and develop critical and creative responses to practical concerns of individuals and the wider community through the study of food. This course provides opportunities for active participation in a variety of practical activities to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the skills and terminology, and an appreciation for, food design, the hospitality industry and information around the benefits of a balanced healthy diet.

The semester comprises the topics:

  • Kitchen Fundamentals – Food Safety and Basic Cookery
  • Healthy Eating and Nutrition
  • Food Trends, Technology and Cultural Influences
  • Meal Design and Issue Investigations

Within these topics, a variety of meals will be prepared to build knowledge and understanding of planning, designing and content, as well as develop cooking skills, recipe costings and budgeting methods.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. This includes participation in cooking practicals, group tasks, creativity, ICT tools, research and evaluations.
