Content:

This course integrates aspects of traditional workshop-based learning with newer digital technologies.

The Materials Technology component of the course will include woodwork, metalwork, plastics and mixed materials technology. Throughout this subject, students will develop skills in design process, by investigating design features and characteristics of materials functionality, as well as use a range of hand tools and fixed machinery to develop products and design solutions.

They will also be introduced to CNC machinery and basic CAD applications, such as 3D printing or laser cutting, CNC plasma cutting, Adobe Illustrator and Autodesk Inventor.

Students will have the opportunity to learn and be immersed in a wide range of different material technologies systems and techniques, that are directly connected to Woodwork and Metalwork.

Student’s will undertake the following Australian Curriculum units of work within the Design and Technologies Course:
• Pot Plant Hanger
• Laser Cutting – CAD and CAM

Safe work practices will be explained and emphasised. Students will be required to complete an online machine safety competency via OnGuard, before operating any workshop equipment or machinery.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
