Recommended background: Successful completion of at least one previous semester of Design (Stage 1, Year 10, Year 9 or Year 8)

Content:

Design encompasses three distinct areas:

  • graphic design
  • environmental design
  • product design

It emphasises a problem-solving approach to the generation of ideas or concepts, and the development of visual representation skills to communicate resolutions.

As per the Subject Outline, in this full-year subject, students are expected to:

  • conceive, develop and present two major practical design projects (negotiated design briefs) that reflect individuality and the development and communication of a personal visual aesthetic (Practical)
  • demonstrate their visual thinking through the development and evaluation of ideas and explorations in technical skills with media, materials and technologies (Folio)
  • apply technical skills in using media, materials, technologies and processes to solve problems and resolve design works (Folio & Practical)
  • communicate knowledge and understanding of their own works and the connections between their own work and that of other design practitioners (Folio & Practitioner’s Statement)
  • analyse, interpret and respond to design in various cultural, social and/or historical contexts (Folio & Visual Study)
  • develop inquiry skills to explore design issues, ideas, concepts, processes, techniques and questions (Visual Study)

Assessment:

Student performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as described in the Subject Outline. Grades A+ to E- will be used for reporting purposes.

  • Assessment Type 3: Visual Study (30%)
