SACE Stage 2 Essential English comes with the expectation that students will be reading, viewing, and composing a variety of texts such as a novel, short stories, advertisements, a documentary and advocacy clips.

Many of the assessment tasks in this program allow students to pursue their interests and develop their literacy skills. The Responding to Texts section provides students with the opportunity to explore unfamiliar texts such as the graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman and the documentary Backtrack Boys. The Creating Texts section includes a range of everyday texts that will allow to develop both literacy and ICT skills as they create texts in a variety of written, oral and multi-modal forms.

The external component, the Language Study, requires students to interact effectively and appropriately with individuals in either vocational, cultural or social contexts. This assessment type is expected to be up to 1,500 words in length.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as outlined in the Subject Outline. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students understanding and skills will be assessed through a variety of tasks that may include: video clips, narratives, advertisements, short answer questions, posters, PowerPoint presentations and infographics.
