Stage 1 Music Experience allows students to select from four different musical styles. Students must select one of the following to study:
Within each Music Experience, students are required to investigate a musician of the chosen music experience, and investigate their history, music style, and reflect on two of their significant songs and how they influenced the musical scene.
Aussie Rock provides students with the opportunity to study Aussie Rock Music. Students need to select an instrument to perform Aussie Rock Repertoire along within composing a Rock song using a composed riff, which needs to include power 5ths or loops and sampled recording. They may present their chosen song as a soloist, in an ensemble or as a DJ. Students will present an evaluation of their performance.
World Rock allows students to compose a song using the rhythms of musical styles like Reggae, Mambo and K-Pop. This could involve loops, sampled recordings and/or the 4-chord song. Students will also perform a piece on their chosen instrument that has been influenced or is part of the World music style. They may present their chosen song as a Soloist, in an Ensemble or as a DJ. Students will present an evaluation of their performance.
Jazz to Rap provides students to compose a song using the call and answer technique used in Blues and Rap, this could involve a soundscape using loops and sampled recordings and/or the blues scale (some students may progress into modes). Students are to perform a piece ion their chosen instrument that has been influenced by Jazz or Rap. They may present their chosen song as a Soloist, in an Ensemble or as a DJ.
Film Music allows students to create a backing track to a film that has no soundtrack using GarageBand. They may choose to use loops, sound effects, compose their own song or mash up professional recordings. Students are to perform a piece ion their chosen instrument that has been used or composed for a film. They may present their chosen song as a Soloist, in an Ensemble or as a DJ.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the rubric provided for the subject. This is based and aligned with the Performance Standards as provided in Music Experience Stage 1 outline in the SACE subject. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
