Length: Semester or Full Year

Recommended background: It is strongly recommended (but not essential) that students have successfully completed a semester of Year 10 Metalwork

Content:

Through this course, students will develop the skills required to design and construct a product, or series of products using metal as the main material.

They will engage in the design process, presented through a folio, to develop concepts for their major product. These processes will have a focus on projecting a range of techniques and skills tailored to Stage 2 Materials Solutions – Metal Fabrication. They will communicate their designs through technical drawings using traditional methods, as well as CAD (computer-aided design) drawing software.

Stage 1 metalwork incorporates welding, fabrication, sheet metal construction and machining techniques. The course will cover Oxy-Acetylene and MIG/TIG welding with time spent on skills development. Students will develop skills using machinery including lathe work, hydraulic guillotine cutting, material bending on the hydraulic panbrake, as well as hand tool skills. They will have the opportunity to use contemporary and traditional metal fabrication techniques, and may use CNC technology in their project, such as laser cutting, CNC plasma cutting and/or the CNC milling machine.

Safe work practices will be explained and emphasised. Students will be required to complete an online machine safety competency via OnGuard, before operating any workshop equipment or machinery.

Subject costs: Some costs may apply to pay for materials used

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

  • Specialised Skills Task 40%
  • Design, Process and Solution 60%
