Recommended background: It is strongly recommended (but not essential) that students have successfully completed a semester of Year 9 Woodwork or Metalwork

Content:

In this course, students will deepen their understanding of traditional hand tools and the working skills required to effectively operate them, as well as experience the use of modern machinery and power tools to complete their projects. The course will focus on:

  • Framing joints, types of framing joints, construction and applications
  • Sanding and finishing techniques
  • Use of a range of solid timbers and manufactured boards
  • Safe use of hand and power tools
  • Use of CNC CAD (computer-aided design) drawing software
  • Use of CNC Machinery including; milling machine and laser cutter

Students will have the opportunity to design and manufacture projects of their own design, working through the design process to develop a brief, generate ideas through research, and refine designs through sketches. These processes will have a focus on projecting a range of techniques and skills tailored to Stage 1 Materials Solutions – Furniture.

Safe work practices will be explained and emphasised. Students will be required to complete an online machine safety competency via OnGuard, before operating any workshop equipment or machinery.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.

  • Theory: 30%
