NAIDOC Week events are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The importance, resilience and richness of Indigenous languages was the focus of NAIDOC Week 2017.
The “Our Languages Matter” theme aimed to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.
Despite the wintry conditions, Port Lincoln High School students participated positively in a series of activities throughout the week; these included a launch event at Youthoria, a cook-out at the Mallee Park Wombat Pit and a 3-on-3 basketball competition (won by Tyrone Miller-Warren, Colby Syvertsen and Troy Docking).
Congratulations to the activity organisers and participants on an enjoyable and informative event.
